Jim was born in Dundee and now lives in Monifieth. Jim has almost forty years experience working as a professional artist. He has produced many landscape and seascape paintings plus a wealth of portraiture and caricatures. Jim’s career started as an illustrator working in children’s comics and women’s magazines. He later became Senior Illustrator, based in the thriving art department of a national publishing company and latterly he was the Commissioning Illustrations Editor for The People’s Friend magazine.
He has worked in a variety of media, including pen and ink drawings, full colour and a vast amount of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Corel Painter work.
In the past twenty years Jim has turned his attention to landscape painting, in particular Scottish Forests and Mountains, he is constantly striving to create atmosphere in his work and now paints mostly in watercolour as he enjoys the spontaneity and unpredictability of the medium. On occasions he will include acrylics, as being able to use the texture of the paint can often capture that elusive mood. Jim continues to be an enthusiastic exhibitor and his work can regularly be found in local exhibitions and galleries.
The success and popularity of Jim’s work is reflected in continued sales both in the UK and as far afield as Ireland, Spain, China, New Zealand and the USA.
Jim left his position on The People’s Friend in 2017 to spend more time painting.
